Cited in Life Magazine as one of the most influential movements from the 20th Century, the movement that will gave birth to the concept of the particular 12-step program, Alcoholics Anonymous obtained its start on June 10th 1935-80 years ago today.

Not without the detractors, naysayers, gurus, pontificators plus bashers, Alcoholics Anonymous has managed its singleness of purpose these types of past 80 years — offering a simple system for people whose lives had been destroyed by Alcohol (and lately drug) abuse and has offered some assist and a means of staying sober, a lot to the bafflement of many. The system based on the principles of Trust God, clean house and Help Others has been the foundation of the program.

And although many over the years have sought in order to discredit the program by swearing this doesn’t work, it’s a que incluye, it’s a cult and it’s some religious group — it’s worked, plus it’s worked for millions of people plus continues to work to this day. That this, at its core is a team with no leaders, no one version associated with God, doesn’t ask for anything other than a desire to get and remain sober and functions by way of individuals banding together and talking to one another, pretty much tosses the idea of it as being a cult out the window.

But sometimes answers that are so easy have to be wrong. It’s human character to think we’re more complex than all of us are — that the key to understanding would be to have an intellectual epiphany. Sometimes, the particular gut, heart and head have got little in common with each other.

So it had been this chance meeting between Bill Wilson, a failed stockbroker plus Dr. Bob Smith, an unsuccessful proctologist, that this movement was born — neither could stay sober on their own. But together, it worked.

To provide some background on how this motion got started, and why June 10th is a significant date in the great Alcoholics Anonymous, I ran across the talk by Dr. Bob Smith given in the late 1940s within the history of AA. Dr. Smith was your first of what would become a number of 100 people who got sober through this Sarah 12-step program. Dr. Smith’s sobriety date is June 10th 1935 — and so that date continues to be determined as the start of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Sadly, the sound is pretty rough. Being an anonymous system, recording any of these meetings or speaks was an afterthought and never meant to be shared to people all over the world. Now its a routine procedure in many meetings as a way of making these types of talks available to people who have limited entry to meetings. But in the 1940s, documenting equipment was an ordeal. This talk, which goes over an hour, has been filled with speed and pitch issues. So I have included a six minute excerpt which gives the gist of AA’s story as informed by one of its founders.

You might or may not have been impacted by alcohol or drug abuse — however, it’s a good chance someone in your loved ones has, as statistics have shown the particular percentages are quite high. You might or might not be a member yourself. You may or even may not believe in 12-step programs and you could or may not have become sober due to them.

But from a history perspective, this day 80 years ago has had a definite impact on people. Had it not really happened, it would be hard to tell just how things would have worked out.

Here is the fact that talk by Dr. Bob Smith from, it’s believ
